20/9/26: student housing collapse leaves 70 in Dundee without rooms

Nearly 70 students lose their rooms weeks before term after their landlord collapses

Students at Marketgait Apartments in Dundee are finding somewhere else to live as term starts, after the owner went into administration in July having failed to repay a £5.7m loan. Rooms had been advertised as still available three weeks earlier, and the block is now shut for fire safety work. If your provider collapses, ask the administrator in writing whether your tenancy stands, who holds your deposit, and who refunds rent you have already paid.

Forty-eight rules for living away from home, from the fridge upwards

Zoe Williams has written a starter pack for freshers in their first weeks of running a household: anything with blood goes at the bottom of the fridge, food left near the fridge is not refrigerated, nothing defrosted gets refrozen, and use an oven glove rather than a wet cloth. The cooking section is four meals worth learning — something quick with protein, something that lasts several days, something you can scale up cheaply, and something comforting you can make for other people.

Feeling lonely before you have even arrived is the ordinary case

A survey of more than 7,800 new students at fifteen English universities found loneliness was the experience most often reported as frequent, and it showed up across every group looked at — where students came from, their sex, age, disability, ethnicity, school background and care status. The authors, from Middlesex University and the University of East London, argue this is the predictable result of a large change rather than a personal failing, and that the useful response is to make connection easy for everyone rather than to treat lonely students as a problem.
