The maintenance figure for a student visa is going up
From 30 November 2026, international students applying for a UK Student visa must show higher living costs: £1,570 a month for courses in London and £1,203 outside it, up to £14,130 for a nine-month London course. It applies to applications made on or after that date, so anyone applying for January or next September needs the new figures, and anyone applying before it does not. Being an international student in the UK covers the requirements.
Bristol councillors reject 126 student rooms
A planning committee has turned down a 126-room student accommodation scheme on Cotham Hill by five votes to three, after more than 160 objections. Purpose-built schemes are what relieves pressure on shared houses in a city, so refusals of this kind are the front end of the shortages that show up two years later as rent rises. Finding student housing covers the market you actually face.
What if your tuition fee came with an itemised bill?
A thought experiment on English fees: American universities itemise, so a student sees what goes to teaching, facilities, sport and administration, while an English student sees one number covering everything. Itemising would make the cross-subsidy between cheap and expensive subjects visible, which is exactly why it has never been attempted here.
