Glasgow apologises after wrongly telling a student he could not graduate
Scotland. Ethan Scott Brown, 23, took his own life on 13 December 2024, the day he should have graduated in geography, after the University of Glasgow told him three months earlier that a missing course mark left him ineligible for an honours degree. Its own inquiry found systemic grading errors, enough marks for a 2:1, and staff who offered no mental health support after he raised concerns. His family have settled a civil action, met the Scottish education secretary on Wednesday and want a fatal accident inquiry held.
A proposed US rule would charge universities $70,000 per graduate kept on for work experience
United States, and a proposal rather than a rule in force. The Department of Homeland Security published it on 7 October: a university would pay $70,000 for each international graduate it recommends for Optional Practical Training, and $30,000 a year for extensions. That scheme currently lets F-1 visa holders work in their subject for 12 months after graduating, with two further years for STEM graduates, so factor it in if America is on your list for postgraduate study.
