Modern languages and music close at Nottingham, and 560 jobs go
Staff were emailed on 5 October that 560 posts will go, fewer than the 608 the university proposed in May. The modern languages and music departments will close, the 73 MRes programmes drop to 10, and faculties become three colleges by August 2027. Anyone already on a course marked for closure can finish their degree, and no new applicants will be taken for it. Designated personal tutors end, so check where your academic support now comes from; faculty question sessions run through October.
Police ask London students to hold today’s march on another date
The Met has urged the University of London Coalition, led by students at King’s, UCL, LSE and SOAS, to pick a different date for its pro-Palestinian march, which is set to run today from the Strand to Bloomsbury on the third anniversary of the Hamas attack on Israel. The Met says it can neither approve nor cancel a protest, but can impose conditions on the organisers and arrest anyone breaking them. The organisers had not replied to the Met when the report was published.
Careers support teaches you to compete before you have decided what you want
Universities put their effort into CVs, mock interviews and employer fairs, which help once a direction is chosen but not before, argues Lorenzo Mugnai, an astrophysicist at Cardiff University. The questions he would put to a student: what are you hoping this will give you, how much uncertainty can you tolerate, what are you prepared to give up, and which assumption, if wrong, would change your decision. Test those by asking people what the work involves on an ordinary day, before committing to a masters or PhD.
