2/2/26: laundry at £5.10 a load, and students choosing between food and clean clothes

York students say laundry costs are forcing a choice

York’s students’ union says washing and drying a single load in university accommodation costs £5.10, and students have described choosing between laundry and food. It is a small number that compounds: a load a week costs over £200 across a year, on top of rent, and it is charged in halls where there is no alternative. Worth checking what your accommodation charges before signing. Budgeting covers the costs nobody quotes.

Three ways to fix student loans, all of them unfair

HEPI’s director sets out the options in the loan row: cut what graduates repay and the taxpayer covers it, raise the threshold and the cost balloons, or keep the freeze and graduates keep paying more than they were told they would. Each is defensible and none is fair, which is why the system has not changed. Useful if you want to understand why the argument never resolves.

Societies sign an open letter against Reform UK groups on campus

Lancaster societies have signed an open letter opposing Reform UK groups operating on campus, and a Reform organiser has responded by accusing them of being against free speech. Under the regulator’s conditions, a students’ union that blocks a lawful group can be complained about directly, so open letters and formal bans now sit in very different legal territory.
