Birmingham student’s death, and what nobody saw
An inquest has heard that a University of Birmingham student, Phil Moyo, died by suicide the day after learning he had failed his exams, with a friend saying she had no idea he was struggling. Universities release results through a portal, at scale, with no one present. If results are coming and you are dreading them, tell one person beforehand — and every university has an out-of-hours line, which is the number worth having before you need it. Student mental health covers support that exists.
Judging the international education strategy on its own terms
HEPI evaluates the government’s new strategy and finds the ambition real but the mechanism unclear: a £40 billion export target built on transnational education and skills, with no target for the student recruitment that currently funds teaching. The gap between those two is where course closures happen.
The Student Loans Company is hiring graduates
Applications are open for the Student Loans Company’s autumn 2026 graduate programme. Public-sector graduate schemes tend to open earlier and close quieter than the large private ones, take people from any discipline, and are worth knowing about in a year when entry-level vacancies are at a six-year low. Graduate jobs in the UK covers the timetable.
