Scotland’s results day brings a record number of places
Tens of thousands of young people in Scotland learned today that they have a place at university or college, and UCAS says the number of Scottish 18-year-olds holding one is a record. Scotland goes first because Qualifications Scotland publishes before the rest of the UK, so places move here before A-level results day. If you are now committed to a city and a hall, moving to university covers what actually needs packing.
Students take the visa restriction to the High Court
Three Sudanese students, two of them doctors, have asked the High Court to overturn the Home Secretary’s March restriction on student visa applications from certain countries, brought in over alleged abuse of the route. The case tests whether restricting applications by nationality is lawful, which matters to any applicant from an affected country holding an offer for this year. Being an international student in the UK covers the rules as they stand.
Universities told to stop treating international students as a problem to fix
A project funded by the Quality Assurance Agency has told universities to drop the assumption that international students arrive deficient, and to look instead at the barriers institutions create — staff themselves told researchers they are uneasy with the “cash cow” framing. The practical effect, if it lands, is changes to induction and assessment for everyone rather than separate support classes bolted on for international students.
Selective universities still have courses in clearing
Guides to what is available through clearing this year put UCL, Bath and Warwick among the highest-ranked universities with courses still open, and a companion list covers the Russell Group specifically, including Edinburgh and Glasgow. Clearing vacancies at selective universities move fast and are course-specific rather than institution-wide, so the list is a starting point and the phone call is what settles it. Moving to university covers what comes next.
