The government says students owe no council tax, but only if they apply
England, Scotland and Wales. A government post on X on Sunday afternoon reminded students that a household where everyone is in full-time education pays no council tax — and that the discount is never applied automatically. If a bill arrives, search “apply for a Council Tax discount” on GOV.UK and put the claim in to your own council. Anyone under 20 studying for a qualification up to A level may also be left out of the count. The average Band D bill in England is £2,392 a year.
Universities say cheaper fees for EU students would cost UK students places
The EU has put a compromise to Andy Burnham in the Brexit reset talks, which the government wants concluded by the end of the year: EU students would pay what a course costs to deliver instead of the international rate. The Telegraph puts that at about £13,000 a year, some £3,000 above a British student’s fee and below international rates reaching £38,000. Modelling of the offer puts the shortfall at £280m, which universities say would take staff, courses and home places with it. Current fees are unchanged while this is negotiated.
