Lecturers strike at Glasgow Caledonian, including graduation
Academic staff at Glasgow Caledonian University have begun a series of strike days over proposed job losses, and the action includes all graduation ceremonies. Graduations are the most visible target available to a union and the most painful for students and families who have booked travel. If yours is affected, ask the university what alternative it will provide and whether costs will be covered.
Twenty thousand signatures against 150 job cuts
Staff at the University of Exeter have vowed to fight proposals to cut about 150 roles, with a petition approaching 20,000 signatures. Petitions rarely reverse a redundancy programme, and they do tell an incoming cohort which departments are under pressure — worth checking if you hold an offer there.
“Get vaccinated”: a survivor of meningitis B
A woman who lost all four limbs to meningitis B has urged young people in Jersey to take the vaccine now being offered to students before they leave for university. Two student outbreaks this year involved the B strain, which the school-age MenACWY vaccine does not cover. GP registration and staying healthy covers what to ask a GP.
