7/2/26: the frozen threshold, costed

What freezing the repayment threshold actually takes from graduates

Economists at London Economics have costed the freeze in the student loan repayment threshold, the mechanism at the centre of this month’s row. Because the threshold does not rise with earnings, a graduate crossing it repays on a larger share of income each year without any announcement being made — fiscal drag applied to people who were told the terms when they borrowed. Student finance explained covers how repayment works.
