Detained since 18 May, now home
The vice-president of King’s College London Students’ Union, Hasnain Jafer, has returned to the UK after being detained by Israel, having been missing since 18 May. Students’ union officers travelling in a political capacity are not covered by university insurance or consular arrangements in the way staff are, which is a gap worth knowing about before any union delegation travels.
Belonging means different things to different students
Senior academics argue that “belonging” — the concept universities now build strategies around — is defined almost entirely from the institution’s perspective, and that for commuter students, mature students and those with caring responsibilities it means something quite different from joining societies. If you have been told to get involved and it did not help, this explains why. Making friends at university covers what does.
Thirty-seven things to do before you graduate
A list for students with one term left, of the kind every university paper produces in May. Worth reading in the first year rather than the last, which is the only real advice in it. Final year of university covers the rest.
